Position Overview

The primary role of the Sr. HDD (Horizontal Directional Drill) Technician is to be responsible for all duties associated with and related to the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of directional drills as well as potholing, installing conduit, pulling cable, installing handholes, pedestals and marker posts. This position will be expected to take a lead role with all drilling, conduit installation, cable pulling, and other installation and network repair work as required.  Other primary duties would be to perform general site preparation, restoration and right-of-way maintenance duties as well as perform preventative maintenance and inspections on equipment.

 

This individual understands each product and supports the improvement of operational efficiency and must be comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces.

 

The Sr. HDD Technician reports to the Project Manager - Fiber Optics and will work primarily out of their assigned location.

What You'll Do

  • Operate directional bore equipment for underground utility construction
  • Perform all aspects of the drilling machine and sond beacon operations
  • Load, secure, and mobilize equipment safely and effectively
  • Operate trenchers, plows, backhoes, excavator, and skid steer
  • Operate tampers, jackhammers, drills, and saws when needed
  • Operate basic hand tools (Cordless Drill, Hammer, Wrench, Socket Set, Shovel)
  • Install and pull underground conduit and cable without disrupting utilities
  • Perform potholing to verify utilities
  • Install handholes, pedestals, and marker posts
  • Work with other crews within the fiber department to complete joint tasks including general site preparation, restoration, right of way (ROW) maintenance, etc.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and inspections on equipment and tools
  • Locate and guide the drill head
  • Perform minor field repairs on equipment
  • Maintain water tanks and associated water line connections to support drilling operations
  • Perform worksite housekeeping duties and equipment inspections
  • Provide roadway flagging support for the operation to include obtaining Flagger Certification
  • Recognize and identify general safety hazards and electrical-specific hazards
  • Ensure work is performed and projects are completed to engineering and design specifications
  • Participate in pre-construction surveys and ride-outs to inform project strategy
  • Assist with marking underground proposed design route with respect to utilities and underground systems
  • Read, interpret, and modify design packages
  • Properly winterize equipment and perform advanced safety equipment checks
  • Complete documentation to include record-keeping, billing, and inventory, etc.
  • Complete daily close of business (COB) reports for customers
  • Make utility locate requests
  • Lead work site restoration and complete job close out documentation
  • Lead, mentor, and train field staff
  • Provide feedback and input for employee performance reviews
  • Responsible to interact directly with customers
  • Responsible for leading multiple projects and crews

    • Lead team members as required in the absence of a Sr. Technician or Manager
  • Valid CDL Driver’s License is required
  • Proficient with the following equipment: ladders, bucket truck, cable puller, and reel stands preferred
  • Proficient with equipment (i.e., mini-excavator, forklift, bobcat, telehandler, skid steer, etc.)
  • Flagger Certification required
  • Advanced knowledge of excavation standards and equipment required
  • Advanced knowledge of soil conditions and scenarios
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces
  • Possess advanced experience and knowledge of underground utility installations
  • Able to read, interpret, and modify drawings to determine work placement and specifications
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision
  • Ability to apply technical expertise, evaluate problems and implement best practices
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Compute basic math calculations and take measurements
  • Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Visio
  • Technical aptitude for working with a variety of tools and technologies
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Efficiently organize and plan work tasks to meet company goals

Working Conditions
