Position Overview

Welcome to the role of Field Technician I – Fiber Optics. In this position, you will string and maintain fiber optic cable which includes pulling, tensioning, stranding, and spacing lines. This individual will troubleshoot, maintain, and repair fiber lines.  This position will perform new cable installs, removals, modifications, and repairs in outside plant locations to include telephone poles, underground services, and conduit.  The Field Technician I is also responsible for terminating, splicing, documenting, and testing fiber optic cables with an end goal of meeting customer needs and providing maximum operating efficiency. The work performed will be within communications and power spaces.

 

This individual understands each product and supports the improvement of operational efficiency and must be comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces for this position.

What You'll Do

  • Safely perform work in communications spaces
  • Qualify to work safely in energized spaces
  • Participate in training for pole climbing
  • Operate basic hand tools (Cordless Drill, Hammer, Wrench, Socket Set)
  • Qualify to perform work from an elevated position in the bucket truck
  • Assist when needed to remove old hardware from poles and install new
  • Provide roadway flagging support for the operation to include obtaining Flagger Certification
  • Assist with worksite housekeeping duties and equipment inspections
  • Assist with performing minor field repairs on equipment
  • Assist with stripping, cleaving, terminating, and testing cable
  • Learn Industry Standard coding for fiber optics
  • Become familiar with fiber optic equipment such as splicers, OTDR (optical time domain refractometer), traffic identifiers, light-source power-meter, fiber specific hand tools, etc.
  • Learn proper methods and procedures for terminating, splicing, and testing fiber optic cables
  • Learn to perform ring cuts on live fiber without affecting existing services
  • Learn to read and understand manufacturer manuals and standards for operating, installing, and repairing electronic equipment, product, and components
  • Learn to troubleshoot and repair common fiber optic equipment and component issues
  • Install demarcation enclosures, switches, and other telecom equipment
  • Route premise cable both inside and outside of facilities
  • Assist in the completion of documentation to include record-keeping, billing, and inventory, etc.
  • Learn to calibrate fiber optic equipment out in the field according to manufacturer’s instructions

Working Conditions

  • Walk / use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls / reach with hands and arms / climb ladders and stairs / crawl / kneel
  • Climb poles; carry, set-up and extend ladders weighing up to 65 pounds, as well as work with confidence on ladders and utility poles at heights of up to 60 feet in the air to perform tasks in communications spaces
  • Work indoors, outdoors, and underground in various weather conditions
  • Able to walk long distances
  • Able to lift up to 65 pounds without assistance

What You'll Bring

  • No prior experience necessary
  • Valid Driver’s License is required
  • Experience operating the following equipment: ladders, bucket truck, cable puller, and reel stands preferred
  • Experience operating small equipment preferred (i.e., forklift, bobcat, telehandler, skid steer, etc.)
  • Ability to identify independent colors and learn color codes
  • General construction and/or flagging experience preferred
  • Ability to obtain and maintain MSHA Certification
  • Must be comfortable working at elevated heights and in confined spaces
  • Ability to work efficiently under minimal supervision
  • Ability to inspect, operate, and mobilize a bucket truck preferred
  • Verbal and written communication skills with the ability to maintain professionalism
  • Compute basic math calculations and take measurements
  • Familiar with Microsoft Software such as Outlook, Word, and Excel
