Position Overview

Are you looking to get hands-on experience and build a strong foundation in mechanical and fabrication work? As a Shop Technician I, you’ll be an essential part of the team, supporting a wide variety of projects involving assembly, basic fabrication, and mechanical applications. You’ll work from drawings to troubleshoot, make repairs, and build new products, gaining valuable skills every step of the way. A general understanding of mechanical systems and construction trades will help you thrive, and you'll also get the chance to learn about the innovative products and services offered by Pillar Innovations. With occasional extended hours, and infrequent travel to customer sites, this role is perfect for someone eager to learn, enjoys hands-on work, and wants to grow in a dynamic shop environment. What You'll Do

General Duties

  • Learn to read and interpret drawings and specifications
  • Learn to set up rigging to hoist equipment
  • Prepare and layout tools and materials for jobs according to specifications
  • Assist with cutting and threading pipe as needed
  • Assist with on-site installations as needed

Assembly

  • Learn to mount steel components, pumps, compressors, piping, etc.
  • Learn to assemble pipe and tube structures
  • Assemble basic structures including metal, aluminum, plastic, etc.
  • Learn to assemble more complex systems such as conveyors, compressors, pump stations, ovens, etc.
  • Learn to properly adhere labels, stickers, etc. per construction drawings

Fabrication

  • Learn to cut and prepare finished metals
  • Assist with basic welding and grinding
  • Learn to identify, lay-out, position, and secure parts and assemblies according to specifications
  • Modify existing structures for customized builds
  • Learn to bend pipe and tube as needed

Mechanical

  • Assist with organizing tools and materials for assembly and installation
  • Learn to interpret mechanical drawings and documentation for custom machines, systems, and products
  • Assist with assembling machinery using bolts, welds, rivets, or otherwise fasten them to foundation or other structures
  • Assist with the final assembly of systems such as air compressors, pumps, motors, instrumentation devices, etc.
  • Assist with system startups and final commissioning as needed

Working Conditions

  • Stand for an extended period of time
  • Walk / use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls / reach with hands and arms / crawl / kneel
  • The employee may regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

What You'll Bring

  • Previous experience and/or education in general construction, mechanical and/or fabrication work preferred
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision, within broad guidelines of procedures and goals
  • Experience with various measuring devices such as straightedge, combination square, gages, tape measures, etc.
  • Ability to read and follow manuals and SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedure)
  • Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints and mechanical drawings
  • Ability to use basic hand and power tools such as pliers, hacksaws, drills, grinders, test equipment, etc.

Fabrication Qualifications

  • Possess basic welding experience
